01/06/2018 - Dumbo Ride

Updated: Feb 6, 2022

When I was three years old, I went to Hong Kong Disney Land. I didn’t sit on Dumbo the elephant ride because I was feeling very scared of Dumbo. I thought Dumbo was a real elephant who flew with his big flappy ears. So I shouted and cried and no one could understand me because I didn’t know how to use my words. Now I feel very sad because I know Dumbo is not a real elephant and I missed the ride.

When I went to Disney Land in L.A. last year I made everyone wait for a long time in the Dumbo ride line because I wanted to go on Dumbo and never miss it again.

Mum Speaks

You wouldn’t imagine that a three or four -year old child couldn’t tell the difference between a real elephant and a Dumbo elephant ride. We couldn’t understand why he threw a fit to sit on the ride and then why he obsessed about it for so many years and kept asking to be taken for the ride. He kept regretting and feeling bad that he didn't sit on the ride. We tried desperately to ask him various questions and come up with some explanation but we could not understand as he couldn’t verbalize it. It was only many years later when he began to write and somehow writing gave him the time to organize his thoughts and maybe age gave him maturity and finally, he was able to tell us. He felt very relieved to explain it to us and has stopped repeating the story since then.

You will notice this similar trend in many of his entries about various movies that he was scared of because he mistook the animated characters for real-life people.
